Helena Simmonds is a Lead Engineer at the University of Warwick with industrial experience of composites in a manufacturing environment.
After graduating from the University of Birmingham with a Masters of Research in “The Science and Engineering of Materials”, Helena joined the Military Air and Information division of BAE Systems. Helena managed the production of torsion box assemblies for the Typhoon aircraft, worked with Quality Engineering reducing inspection of hot formed parts and finally in Materials Engineering supporting composites detail manufacture.
Helena joined WMG at the University of Warwick in 2013; here she works within the Engineering Materials and Manufacturing department. The group works alongside industry to identify light weighting solutions for high volume automotive applications. Helena specialises in Composite materials and is investigating the use of discontinuous carbon fibre composites in high volume applications. Her work involves mechanical and thermal analysis of materials for composite applications and then validating the performance using actual components manufactured in a range of processes such as compression moulding and Resin Transfer Moulding.
