Simon is Director, Manufacturing and Materials at Innovate UK the UK’s innovation agency.
From April 2016 Simon became the Director for Manufacturing and Materials as Innovate UK organised into a sector facing organisation. Simon Edmonds joined Innovate UK in January 2013 from the Department of Business Innovation and Skills as the Director of the Catapult Programme. Innovate UK currently has eleven Catapult centres in the UK. No stranger to Innovate UK‐ Simon was the Departments Director Innovation which included sponsorship of the Technology Strategy Board as well as other bodies within the UK innovation ecosystem; Design Council, Nesta, National Measurement System, BSI, UKAS. Prior to Innovation, Simon was responsible for Business Sectors within DTI, BERR and BIS covering all industrial sectors. He was responsible for many Innovation and Growth reviews and Manufacturing Strategies in 2004 and 2008. As Director Innovation he initiated the Hauser Review and worked closely with Hermann Hauser to deliver the review and subsequent funding by Ministers.
Latterly at BIS, Simon was responsible for the transition of functions from the Regional Development Agencies and their subsequent closure in 2012. In addition to the closure of the RDAs Simon was Director for the Governments £2.7 billion Regional Growth Fund.
Simon joined the civil service in 2002. Prior to that Simon was Chief Executive and Divisional Managing Director of a number of SME businesses and had a 16‐year career with Raychem Corporation. At Raychem he was Managing Director of Sigmaform following its acquisition by Raychem and head of new product development for Raychem’s Electrical Products Division.
Simon graduated with a Business Degree from Aston University and has a MBA from Henley Management College. Simon is a graduate of the Governments Major Projects Leadership Academy and has conducted several major project reviews as well as leading major projects.
